who we are
a church dedicated to making richmond beautiful.values
empowering people toward a life-giving journey with jesus
everyone can gather and everyone matters
Everyone is accepted at Center Church. We want people to be known for who they are and where they’re going. Each of us plays a unique role in making transformation a reality. We believe in a space that offers radical hospitality through excellence with Grace, equality, and love.
a church every day rather than one day
We are called to be the church wherever we gather. We believe that it is not enough to gather simply once a week, rather that it’s better to be a church every day of the week. Sunday represents only a piece of who we are, and what we’re called to be. We will be aware of our calling to be transformational, and our vision to expand our reach in this city and beyond. To care well for those that are oppressed and voiceless, every single day..
empower transformation to lead transformation
We believe that growth leads to influence in people’s lives. When we take the transformation of Jesus seriously, we can’t help
we will be givers to be growers
We believe that radical giving of our time, resources, talents, and life leads to growth in our heart. That by very literally giving ourselves, we’re allowing God to fill our hearts. We live in a reality of consumerism, where we give in order to get something in exchange. This type of consumerism leaves us wanting more. However, when we give to others for transformation we experience lasting change in our heart. By giving, we’re extending our reach and circle to those around us and our city. We are partnering with the movements of God.
we celebrate unity in the midst of diversity
We all have different stories, backgrounds, and ideas—that is what makes us the beautiful collective
our story
Center Church is a church plant with the Evangelical Covenant Church in Richmond, Virginia. The movement was birthed out a vision of the pastor, Stephen Poore, while living in the arctic tundra known as Chicago in 2013. Simply put, Stephen had a vision for a church to be a different kind of church. This different kind of church would be a place for people, of all walks of life, to experience Jesus’ transformational acceptance and love. Stephen believed that the church should represent the diversity of its locality and utilize a collective of people, their talents, gifts, and passions to bring about empowerment through Jesus.
Center Church wants to be a church in the city, to make “Richmond Beautiful.” Center Church’s mission is bold wanting to catalyze all people through leadership multiplication and discipleship. We believe our future is church planting, and we position ourselves with that in mind – In RVA as it is in HEAVEN.

richmond beautiful
Richmond is a pretty great place to live. On the surface, it seems like it is the place to be; a rolling river, bike trails, excellent music scene, fantastic art museum – and art scene – and don’t EVEN get me started on the food here, it’s incredible (and fried). However, under the surface of all the reasons to adore this city lies a hidden painful side.
We have unspoken injustices that creep under the belly of this beautiful city. We have rampant poverty, inequality, and a school-to-prison pipeline.
We believe that equality is a kingdom calling and a Church mandate to help destroy the principalities designed to oppress our neighbors. God’s kingdom must be made available by creating avenues for restoration, peacemaking, and hope. Center Church exists for this movement in our city. Richmond Beautiful is a belief that one day our city, country, and world will be restored. Thoughts and prayers are great, but it’s through action and responsibility that true Kingdom movements are revealed.
